Minority community seminar for South Asian residents
Hong Kong is an international city with a diverse nationality. This fall we were able to reach out to another group of individuals often neglected by the society; we were invited by the Service for Ethnic Minorities Unit of HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre to offer a series of exercise classes for women who are minority as they tried to make good use of their time outside of housework to learn whole body stretching exercises. Since they speak neither Chinese nor English, an interpreter was required during the exercise class. That was an interesting experience for us too!
We had offered workshops on a vast range of topics (including back pain stretch, shoulder pain stretch and knee pain stretch) for Indian women with the objective to promote the concepts of exercising and the ways to do them properly for maximal benefits. The exercise classes were very successful, and we were asked to offer a follow up teaching class in order to improve the competency of the participants who joined the exercise classes previously as they shared what they learnt to their family members and/ or other community members.
